I sit at my desk and watch the changing modular world through experienced eyes. There have been a lot of changes over the years and as they say “you can’t stop progress”.
But I’m having a tough time with some of the “Green” modular homes that are being put on the market lately. I know that almost all the traditional factories are into Energy Star and “Green” including Clayton Homes’ I-house and All-American Homes. Even these leave me baffled but I can live with that.
The real trouble I’m having stems from the boutique modular factories.
Michelle Kaufmann introduced the modular world to her idea of what the modular house of the future should be. It was both very “Green” and energy efficient but it looked a little chunky in my opinion. Oh, did I mention that she has closed up shop?
Then I started to hear about other factories opening that produced similar “boutique” homes and that’s when I stopped and said “HUH?”
At prices per square foot approaching $350, I really don’t understand their appeal.
Sorry Boutique Modular Factory owners…I just don’t get it. From everything I’ve seen, these houses are small and look like only George Jetson would buy them.
Now I’ve found another manufacturer, Marmol Radizner Prefab, that is going to build these boxcar style homes. One of their homes is $179,000 for 660 sq ft. I hope that includes delivery and a completed house. It should for over $270 per sq ft!
NOTE: i JUST LEARNED FROM THE ABOVE ARTICLE THAT MARMOL RADIZNER HAS CLOSED UP THEIR SHOP AND LEFT TOWN.
This is the RICON 5, the largest of that series at 660 sq ft
I would REALLY like to know if you could live in one of these new “green” homes for only $350 a sq ft?

spoke to them a while a go and their price to builders was !85 to 210 a square foot. One has set, crane and finishing onto this cost. Then their is profit if there is any. They are predominantly WestCoast. That is where they should stay.
